The Heinz junction was shaken by a 3.6-magnitude earthquake

Residents of Haines Junction in the Yukon were hit by a 3.6-magnitude earthquake on Saturday morning.

The quake struck 14 kilometers west of the Haines intersection at a depth of five kilometers and occurred just before 8 a.m., according to the Seismological Center of the US Geological Survey.

Chuck Hume was lying in bed watching TV at his home in Canyon Creek, about 30 kilometers east of Haines Junction, when he heard a crash.

“I didn’t know exactly what happened because the building shook kind of. I heard a little squeak, groans and snow sliding off the roof,” said Champaign and Sheikh Ishishik First Nation.

“Just bum, you know, it crashed. There was a little bit of vibration, you know, but nothing dangerous.”

Hume soon realized it was an earthquake.

Nothing fell from Hume’s shelves and aftershocks were not felt.

But he thinks his dogs might have it.

He said, “I think our dogs feel something, because after a little while, many times, they run around the room, you know, and they’re snarling and barking.” “They have more feelings than us.”

Hume said he was not worried about this “thankful” and had felt some earthquakes in the area over the years.

With that said, there is always a concern that the next will be “the big.”

‘Not very strong’

Saturday’s earthquake was “relatively small,” but about 17 Haines Junction residents reported it to the US Geological Survey, according to Paul Caruso, the agency’s geophysicist.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are common worldwide and are “not very strong,” Caruso said.

He does not expect any property damage due to the earthquake.

“People might feel a little bit of the vibration and see their chandeliers swing back and forth,” he said.

But as Haines junction residents know all too well, tremors are common in the area.

“This is part of the slope of the entire Pacific plate under the chain of Alaska and Aleutian Islands, which is why we have so many earthquakes in that area,” Caruso said.

Over the past 10 years, nearly 1,000 earthquakes occurred within 250 kilometers of the epicenter on Saturday.

Caruso said the largest was at 5.3 degrees on June 4, 2014.
