A site of exclusion has kept the area surrounding the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster site hidden from public view for many years. In 2020 there was a record for forest fires in the area. Firefighters sent to deal with the fires in the radioactive woods agreed to speak to the BBC anonymously, fearing they would lose their jobs. Their accounts reveal the chaos of the month, until the fires almost reached the nuclear reactors.
