Earthquake aid truck bound for Croatia leaves Ireland

A truck loaded with aid is leaving today to help thousands of people affected by an earthquake in Croatia last month.

Funds were raised after an online appeal was submitted by members of the Croatian community living in Ireland.

Vedran Soltek, who lives in Crossakiel, Co Meath, organized the call through his Facebook page “Start from Scratch” Ireland.

It is a group created to help Croatians moving to Ireland, and has helped children in Croatia along with other funders.

“I know some people personally in the middle of Croatia. Their homes are completely destroyed, they are flattened to the ground, people sleep in their cars, children who live on the streets in tents, it’s disastrous,” Soltik said.

The group made the appeal in the days following the December 29 earthquake, and it had such a response that it had to organize a truck to transport aid.

“We were going to send a truck with someone who might have been on a trip to Croatia anyway, but it became clear we had to get a truck,” he explained.

Seven people were killed and many others were left homeless when the earthquake struck. I felt it in the Croatian capital, Zagreb, in neighboring Bosnia, in Serbia, and in places as far away as Italy.

The towns of Petringa and Sisak were the hardest hit.

The mayor of Petringa said that about half of the city was destroyed. About 20 thousand people live in Petranga.

The group said it has shortlisted items including baby clothes, napkins, nappies and baby formula. Sleeping bags, generators, heaters and cribs are also included in the list.

“People have gone a step further. It is just the pure generosity of the Croatian and Irish community. Several Irish companies have made donations as well. And we had pickup trucks all over the country to collect donations,” Soltek added.

“Everything was organized in about five days, which I find great and without the help of these people none of this would be possible.”

The truck was scheduled to leave Ashburn at Ko Meath this afternoon and is expected to arrive in Croatia by Thursday.
