Americas News, Washington, DC, Tuesday. January 12, 2021: Today, Tuesday, January 12, 2021 marks 11 years since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti.

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at 4:53 pm, the ground opened, and nearly 250,000 people were killed. Eleven years later, Food For The Poor, an organization that was present in Haiti before the tragedy, says it “is still changing lives.”

FFTP Chairman / CEO Ed Rennes says that although an estimated 1.3 million Haitians were left homeless after the earthquake, thousands of homes have been rebuilt since then to help families in need.

FFTP through donors built 11,462 permanent two-room concrete houses with water and sanitation components which provided more than 68,772 people a safe place to live.

Today, most of the tent towns that once dominated the landscape of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding communities have disappeared.

But the FFTP says there is an urgent need for drinking water, food and medical care, which is becoming more and more important now as the Caribbean nation bears the coronavirus pandemic.

The organization says it has installed 169 water purification units that purify approximately 1.7 million gallons of water per day; Drilled 1089 wells with pumps; Build, replace or expand 71 schools and ship 12,941 tractor-trailer loads of aid, which includes rice, sardines, beans, rice / soybean meal, medicine, medical supplies, school furniture, housing, tiles, shoes, hygiene supplies, household items, cleaning supplies and construction equipment.

“This virus has pushed families living in poverty into more food insecurity,” said Ryan.

He also revealed that the “Food for the Poor” organization took proactive measures in the early stages of the Coronavirus and began shipping additional containers of food and personal protective equipment to Haiti.

Ryan added: “We have also bought supplies inside the country to get help faster.” “While fulfilling our commitment in the past, we are also determined to help break the cycle of poverty through sustainable development strategies in the future. This will be the greatest remembrance of those who perished in the earthquake.”
