Mercedes faces huge challenge in Formula 1 before ‘earthquake’ changes F1 News

Mercedes chief Toto Wolf says his team faces a “colossal” challenge to stay on top in Formula 1 this year, ahead of the “earthquake” of all new 2022 regulations.

Mercedes pulls out of the rear of seven consecutive Formula One pairs, and is a favorite for the next campaign with teams carrying their cars for the second season.

But Wolf says the difficulties in setting a cost cap linked to the headache of getting all new cars ready for 2021 mean his team is preparing for a tough time.

Wolf told Autosport of his ideas for the upcoming campaign: “For us, it will be an interesting year, because we need to structure ourselves in a different way than we did before, given the maximum cost.”

“We face this formidable challenge of slightly amended 2021 regulations and a major earthquake of 2022 regulatory change.”

He added: “There are factors that work against us that motivate us a lot, factors that work in our favor, because we think that we have a good organization.

“But overall, we are embracing change and we’ve always done this in the past. So the organization is looking very much forward to 2022.”

While Mercedes has not finalized a new contract with Lewis Hamilton, one assurance of it is that Wolf himself has committed to a new deal to remain as manager of the team for the next three years.

Wolf has always been clear about his commitment to doing his best for Mercedes, even though he remained vigilant about the succession plan at some point.

“I enjoy the bonds that I have within the team, and as long as I think I can contribute, this is my role,” he said.

“But equally, I must make sure that I do not create a bottleneck in leading the team. This is my responsibility to our employees, to Mercedes and to Mercedes GB shareholders: consider when the baton can be handed over to someone better than me.”

The delay in finalizing details of Wolf’s stay on board was caused by INEOS ‘arrival as a team shareholder, with a review of team ownership.

Ultimately, the team was split in three ways between the parent company of Mercedes Daimler and Ineos Wolf.

When asked why it took him so long to settle a new deal with Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius, Wolf said: “My relationship with Ola, Daimler, the board of directors and the various people who work for Daimler are as good as possible.

“And we have a company that we jointly own.

“Looking to the future is not always as simple as extending a business contract, because it is about talking about the relationship between shareholders in the future. This is something that takes time.

“In every other structure or company, don’t go from day to day until you simply find a solution to every question about governance and contributing to the future. So, that’s the normal way of doing things.”
