The murder of transgender woman Mesha Caldwell

2017 was one of the worst years for transgender people in the United States.

At least 28 murders were reported by Human Rights Campaign, the worst record.

Many in the LGTBI community are fearful that the fight for approval has delayed President Trump’s efforts. His administration had already tried to ban transgender people militarily and dismantled protective officers for transgender students.

Additionally, legislation has been introduced in states such as Mississippi that prohibit organizations and individuals from serving, marrying, or employing LGBT people based on their religious beliefs. Last time, the Supreme Court ruled against a Colorado baker because a religious couple refused to make a cake because of their religious object.

Activists claim that transgender women in the South are at greater risk. Kiran Moodley has traveled to Mississippi to learn more about the murder. Still more than a year still to fix.
