Millions of families in Nepal are still recovering from the devastating 2015 earthquake and floods, and living in difficult conditions. Safe shelter is a privilege not yet enjoyed by many since the disaster destroyed more than 800,000 homes.

For rural communities, the effects of forced migration may perpetuate the vicious cycle of poverty and lack of infrastructure in their home countries.

The influx of Nepalese men who migrate abroad or to urban areas for work means that the burden of strengthening their local infrastructure has fallen largely on the shoulders of women.

One of these women is Niruta BK, a mother of three who is now able to not only support herself, but also provide employment opportunities for other women around her by being a pioneer in a sustainable building business.

While she personally regrets sending her husband abroad in search of work, her spirit of adventure has saved other families around her from the same situation.

The social enterprise and winner of the Ashden Sustainable Building Environment Prize 2020 (Global), works to enable rural entrepreneurs to start their own projects in small-scale construction, and build flexible and affordable homes.

These homes, unlike traditional cement brick homes, were built using a simple solution: interlocking bricks.

The bricks are made by mixing and compacting soil, sand and cement, which completely eliminates the need for combustion or fuel, thus emitting 35-60 percent less CO2 emissions.

To date, each enterprise creates 15 low-cost, disaster-resistant homes, 10-12 jobs, and saves 70 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Inclusive construction and green recovery

Founder Björn Soderberg, who was initially desperate about the Covid pandemic and its impact on local people’s livelihoods, felt to see returning migrants seizing the opportunity for a green recovery from the coronavirus.

Since then, the number of new construction companies supported by Build Up Nepal has doubled every month, and the construction prices of these eco-friendly homes have surpassed those of regular homes.

Building Nepal’s business with more than 50 women entrepreneurs is a testament to the social impact of improving women’s skills, as well as faith in rural economies to reduce migration by creating green jobs.
