Could another major earthquake happen after a 6.5 magnitude March tremor?

KTVB spoke with a researcher about what they learned about the 6.5-magnitude earthquake in Idaho and its aftershocks.

Boise, Idaho – From Boise to Cascade and Chalice, people from all over Idaho felt a 6.5-magnitude earthquake in March. On Friday, Lee Liberty, a research professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Boise State University, explained to KTVB what scientists have discovered since the earthquake struck north of Stanley.

“Just to be clear, the earthquake sequence isn’t over,” Liberty said.

He and a team of researchers have been studying the earthquake, its aftershocks, and the possibility of another major earthquake.

Liberty said: “There is still in the realm of probability another major earthquake as in something with a magnitude of five or six. It would not be surprising because what we know about previous earthquakes in Idaho.” They were followed by another major earthquake somewhere between six months and a year after the main shock. So I wouldn’t say that I expect a big earthquake, but it is within the range of possibilities. “

Since March, there have been more than a thousand earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher recorded and those aftershocks are expected to continue.

“We know Idaho is an earthquake country, and we know that active faults extend across the state and we know that these kinds of earthquakes only or often only happen once every 10 years, let’s say, so these types of earthquakes are few and far between,” Liberty said.

Liberty said that during this latest study, researchers were able to learn more about what is known as a sawtooth error.

Liberty said: “So, we still have some questions regarding how far north this rift will extend and then also how southward these aftershocks will continue to be generated.”

What they know is that most of the earthquakes have now traveled south towards Redfish Lake.

“They kind of go along with what’s called a sawtooth error, which has been known to be an active fault for some time now,” Liberty said.

Scientists are now using this research to get a better understanding of the stakes and dangers that are put out there, and eventually they can apply it to other mistakes in Idaho.

“In my view, this was the perfect earthquake; it generated a lot of interest, but there was no damage to property. For me, this was a perfect opportunity to study tectonics in Idaho.

He added that researchers know that a sawtooth crack can generate earthquakes on a scale greater than 6.5 and that is one of their concerns. They are also particularly worried about earthquakes in the winter due to the increased likelihood of avalanches.
