Activist in Philadelphia, former boxer Paul Earthquake Moore, died at the age of 62

Philadelphia (WPVI) – Former Philadelphia activist and boxer Paul Earthquake Moore died Friday at the age of 62.

The former Associate Minister of the New Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church has always set out to prove that sometimes the actions of someone who can speak volumes.

The news has saddened many across the city who are aware of his tireless work against violence, mentoring children, and aiding the poor for three decades.

Moore has been active on several peace marches over the years to denounce the bloodshed in the streets amid the armed violence in the city.

“It starts at home. It starts with the unit of mother and father at home. The father has to come forward. We must be the parents of these children.” Moore said.

The former boxer-turned-community activist and minister died Friday after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 62 years old.

“He fought to the end. I can honestly say that.” His wife, Crystal Moore, said.

In the years leading up to his illness, Moore would make annual turkey tours to raise turkey baskets for those in need.

He was organizing training camps to mentor kids, and for many years, he was the community, Santa Claus, handing out toys to children in need.

“He was a fighter. He played Klaus in the community the day before he was hospitalized. He couldn’t even climb up the stairs.” Mrs. Moore said.

His wife says what inspired him was his love for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Martin Luther King was his hero. He loved Martin Luther King. He loved everything that he represented. When someone said,” Did you know that today is Martin Luther King’s birthday? I just smiled. It was like, This is Paul, this is the earthquake. His wife said.

Councilor Kenyatta Johnson was among the many who mourned his loss.

“Paul Earthquake Moore was a giant,” Johnson said. “He was a good guy everywhere, so today is a big loss for sure.”

Commissioner Marvin Smith from Darby Top. He said, “Reverend Moore was there fighting for the people, to promote unity, peace and love.”

Johnson says he will make a decision to honor Moore’s life and legacy.

He says residents are also asking that a street be named after him as well.
