European Union helps Croatia after devastating earthquakes | News
In the resolution mitigating the consequences of the earthquakes in Croatia, MEPs said the European Commission, along with other European and Croatian institutions, should reduce administrative requirements to access assistance and support for people on the ground. They warn that the Croatian authorities are under significant financial pressure and that the extremely dangerous situation in the affected areas may lead to an irreversible decline in the population with devastating social and economic consequences.
Begin reconstruction as soon as possible
Members of the European Parliament welcome the solidarity shown by member states, the European Union institutions and the international community through mutual assistance in emergency situations. They stressed the importance of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism in enhancing cooperation between national civil protection authorities across Europe.
They state that, with the experts of the commission, the Croatian authorities should now quickly assess the total damage in the Sisak Moslavina district and start reconstruction as soon as conditions permit. Members of the European Parliament (MEP) encourage the authorities to ensure that businesses comply with earthquake-resistant building and infrastructure requirements, and use the best professional practices and experience from other member states.
Finally, MEPs stress that recovering from severe earthquakes – such as those in Croatia – is taking a long time. This should be taken into account when reviewing the European Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to ensure there is sufficient time to absorb funds after the current application deadlines.
The resolution was adopted on Thursday, by 677 votes, five against and one abstention.
background
On December 29, 2020, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck central Croatia, killing many people and severely damaging many homes and infrastructure around the city of Petringa. Through the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism, 15 countries have sent immediate assistance, including housing containers, winter tents, sleeping bags, beds and electric heaters. Croatia was already hit by a strong earthquake in the Zagreb region in March 2020, causing more than 11.5 billion euros in damage. One person died and at least 27 others were injured. To help the country cope with the devastating effects of that earthquake, Parliament has provided 683.7 million euros from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF).
