Strengthening the vital partnership between the WHO and France
On December 7, 2020, senior representatives of the French government and the WHO gathered for a practical strategic dialogue to review cooperation during 2020 and discuss key common cooperation priorities for 2021. The meeting aimed to agree on concrete ways to improve cooperation and a roadmap. around key areas: WHO Academy, preparedness and response to health emergencies, including response to COVID-19, investment in resilient health systems, particularly through primary health care and multilateralism in health with a strengthened WHO as a leader in global health.
“Today, France and the WHO are joining forces on major health priorities which further deepens their already existing partnership,” said Ms. Jane Ellison, WHO Executive Director for External Relations and Governance. “We are honored to count France among our best associates and strong supporters in all circumstances.”
The meeting focused on the following steps for WHO Academy, a special priority initiative of the Director-General of the WHO, supported by France. The world’s largest and most innovative platform for lifelong learning in global healthcare will offer high-tech learning environments at a “hub” in Lyon. The WHO Academy, which aims to reach 10 million students worldwide by 2023, will change the game for lifelong learning in healthcare and help achieve WHO’s “triple billion” goal.
Other health topics such as the role of International Health Regulations (IHR), the future WHO Lyon Office,, Accelerator access COVID-19 Tools (ACT)Progress – global cooperation initiated by the WHO, France and other partners and primary health careUniversal health coverage was discussed.
This meeting was also an opportunity for France to emphasize the importance of strengthened multilateralism and its support for the key role of the WHO in providing a coordinated response to global health challenges.
The annual strategic dialogue comes at a time when France has reaffirmed its strong commitment and leadership in global health with three key announcements this year: 1) launching ACT-Accelerator initiative President Emmanuel Macron, WHO and Partners in Support of Development and Equal Access to Tests, Treatments and Vaccines COVID-19 2) an additional € 50 million contribution to guide the ACT-Accelerator initiative through the WHO to intensify the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic for 2020-2021 3) launching a High Level Expert Council going forward with One health approach strengthen prevention and preparedness for new zoonotic diseases.
