Low-magnitude earthquake shakes Lima News

Historically, Lima has been the epicenter of many small earthquakes in the past. When a 2.5-magnitude earthquake struck the area in the early morning, it was still the last thing people had expected.

The earthquake jolted the area a little this morning, but thankfully it didn’t cause much damage or problems. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, an earthquake occurred just after midnight directly under Woodlawn Cemetery in Lima.

About 100 people reported feeling the earthquake, including Dr. Mark Kleffner, associate dean at The Ohio State University Lima.

“Frankly, I didn’t think it was an earthquake. I was just in bed, I was just about to fall asleep, and I heard what I thought was a loud burst of thunder,” says Klevner.

In fact, he says, experiencing an earthquake in Lima is not rare. This area has seen the most earthquakes from all over Ohio in the past two hundred years.

He also says it’s not something Ohioans should be worried about, as the magnitude of earthquakes in the area remains relatively low. But even so, feeling the tremor beneath your feet will cause you to pose some questions.

“Maybe a lot of people shared my experience, and a lot of people like me haven’t thought anything about the earthquake. If they’re still awake, they might be thinking, ‘Well, that’s kind of strange thunder at this time of year but I don’t know what it could be,’ says Klevner. Other than that ”

And he was right. Others felt the earthquake and made their own assumptions about what might happen.

Peggy Iora, a resident of Lima, says, “The house shook, like a jolt, it just shook. Your first thought is,“ What was that? ”And you’re thinking, Is this just your house? Your second thought is, maybe something happened in the refinery.”

“It felt like the whole house shook. I wasn’t sure, at the time I honestly thought someone had broken into the place,” said Judy Robinson, a resident of Shawnee.

Both women said they took their concerns to Facebook to find out what could be causing the fuss. They both said that other people from all over Lima and the surrounding area shared the same experience.

“But you still kind of wondered,” What just happened in our society, is it a refinery? I wouldn’t expect an earthquake, “Robinson says.
