An earthquake that strikes Indonesia has already destroyed an international one

A father of three who identified himself as Robert told The Associated Press that he was in Mamuju Mitra Manakara Hospital when the earthquake started. The wooden bed woke him up, and he pulled the drop out of his hand before he ran out. He said, “I cried when I saw the hospital I was treating collapsing and people are still inside.” “I would have died if I got out late.”

Didi Hamzar, disaster preparedness director, said rescuers had pulled at least 18 survivors out of collapsed buildings. The region has set up a navy hospital ship and field health centers to bolster the medical response. The International Red Cross deployed seven ambulances and first aid teams in the area. Mark Baker, Director of Disaster Response at Water Mission, told me that his team has also dispatched a mobile unit to deliver clean water to affected communities. Indonesian President Joko Widodo mobilized the army and police to assist in rescue and relief operations and pledged more government support during Tuesday’s visit to Mamuju: “Soon the central government will rebuild, then for collapsed homes, the government will help those who have been severely damaged.”

The archipelago nation sits on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of fault lines in the Pacific Basin, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tidal waves.

Other disasters struck the country. On Monday, Widodo visited southern regions on the island of Borneo, where last week floods killed at least 15 people and forced thousands of people to flee their homes. On January 9, a deadly landslide on the island of Java bury around 40 people. On the same day, a Sriwijaya airliner crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 62 people on board.
