7.0-magnitude earthquake near the Antarctic base in Chile: Officials

Chilean emergency officials said that a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Saturday off the coast of Antarctica, as authorities issued a tsunami warning to Eduardo Fry’s Chilean base in the frozen continent.

The Chilean National Emergency Office (UNEMI) said the quake occurred at 8:36 pm (2336 GMT) 210 kilometers (130 miles) east of the base at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), and urged evacuation from the “beach area.” From the South Pole “before a possible tsunami.

The Chilean Air Force base is the largest in the country in Antarctica and includes a village, hospital, school, bank, post office and chapel.

The maximum population in summer is 150 people, and the average population in winter is 80.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Santiago on Saturday night, but Onemi said no major damage or impacts were reported.

Chile is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. An 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Concepcion on February 27, 2010 kills more than 500 people.

The country suffered the strongest earthquake ever recorded in 60 years – a magnitude of 9.6 – in Valdivia.
