A wireless emergency alert test is planned for February 25 in Pierce, King, Thurston counties
Submitted by the Washington Military Administration
At 11 a.m., Feb.25, the Washington Department of Emergency Management and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) will jointly send a Wireless Emergency Alert Test (WEA) message over several wireless devices in King, Pierce and Thurston counties. This is a test in the lead up to our launch later this year of the Earthquake Early Warning System in Washington state.
The demonstration takes place in the same month with the twentieth anniversary of the 6.8 Nisqually earthquake, which occurred on February 28, 2001.
To receive test letters, mobile phone users must OPT IN. Most of the newer Apple and Android phones have the option to receive WEA 2.0 and WEA 3.0 test messages. Don’t assume your carrier has opted for you. For directions on how to sign up, visit the Washington Emergency Management website or check out your cell phone company.
“There are a lot of people who remember the Niskwale earthquake, and testing the EWS is a great way for us to prepare for the system launch in late May,” said Maximilian Dixon, geological hazards supervisor at the Washington Emergency Office. administration Department. “Testing is an important part of our process prior to the system’s widespread release. This has been an enormous effort to improve alertness to reduce earthquake and tsunami risks in our state.”
King, Pierce and Thurston counties were selected for this test because they are regions with the highest intensity of seismic monitoring and have large population centers with high earthquake risk.
There would be no similar test using the emergency alert system on a TV or radio. This test is only intended for wireless devices, as it will emit a distinct notification sound and the message will appear in a text window on the screen.
The test message “Test Earthquake Alert System” will appear. TEST -USGS ShakeAlert. It will also be sent in Spanish.
The Wireless Emergency Alert System is one of several methods by which earthquake alerts are released to the public when the ShakeAlert-supported earthquake early warning system is launched in Washington State in late May 2021. The Washington State Department of Emergency Management is also working on the app that will include preparedness information.
Once launched, the Earthquake Early Warning System will be able to provide public seconds to notify that an earthquake jolt is on its way, giving them time to take precautionary measures, such as fall, cover, and wait. ShakeAlert is not a predictor of earthquakes. The Alert System detects earthquakes and quickly estimates which vibrations will cause them. The system will also have the ability to automatically shut off water valves to protect the water supply, raise fire station doors so first responders can take out vehicles and equipment, slow trains so they don’t get derailed, and even warn hospitals against stopping surgeries, among many other capabilities.
“The ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning is an important new technology that will become a staple of earthquake safety for all of us in Washington state and the entire West Coast,” said Harold Tobin, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. “I am really excited that we are getting close to a live broadcast with a public alert in the coming months. These warnings could save lives and property when a devastating earthquake strikes. It is very appropriate that this test of the new system comes nearly 20 years after the Niskwale earthquake.”
