West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency is urging people to expect a landslide

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Danny Ramadan, Acting Head of West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said the mapping of potential disaster prone areas has been shaped up to the village level, with the hope that the public will have an understanding of disaster conditions in their areas.

He believed that people’s understanding and awareness of staying vigilant was crucial.

“Only an earthquake that cannot be predicted when and where it will happen. But for floods, we can see them from natural conditions, such as coastal floods that can be predicted by rising sea water. Meanwhile, tsunamis and earthquakes are unpredictable,” Danny told Antara on Saturday, January 30th.

After mapping the disaster, regional governments were asked to form a disaster mitigation plan at every district level, sub-district, and even village level. “Villages, for example, can constitute evacuation routes and / or evacuation stations whenever a disaster occurs,” he said.

West Java BPBD data recorded 852 landslides in the area throughout the year 2020, some of which claimed fatalities. In early 2021, a landslide that hit Cihanjuang Village in Cimanggung, Sumedang Regency, on Saturday 9 January, killed 40 people, while in early 2020, seven people died due to a landslide in Sukajaya, Bogor.

Compared to Central Java, West Java has been reported to have less landslides. West Java BPBD recorded 1,387 landslides throughout 2020. In Central Java, a researcher at the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said that the natural event only occurs in certain cities or provinces, while in West Java, nearly every city / County is vulnerable to a landslide.

Many landslides in West Java have the potential to take lives as many residential areas are built in steep plains or steep areas.

PVMBG Researcher Sumariono saw that 80 percent of landslide events were caused by heavy rainfall. Therefore, during the rainy season caused by the La Nina phenomenon, the government and the public are urged to be aware of the possibility of a landslide in West Java.
