The army distributes aid to West Sulawesi refugees by helicopter

Mamuju, W. Sulawesi (Antara) – The Indonesian military (TNI AD) distributed humanitarian aid to refugees from the strong January 15 earthquake in an isolated area in Mamuju district using a helicopter.

“The Indonesian National Army will continue to distribute aid among the earthquake refugees in isolated areas in Mamuju district, using a helicopter,” said Colonel Aji Sartono, commander of the Mamuju district military command, on Saturday.

The isolated areas are located in the Tapalang sub-district in Mamuju district of West Sulawesi province

He explained that “the areas are difficult to reach by land, whether by four-wheel or two-wheel vehicles, as the landslides caused by the earthquake affected the road leading to isolated areas.”

The Indonesian army has deployed 1,400 personnel to help those affected.

In the first phase, he said, 300 kilograms of logistics services were distributed to isolated areas.

The number of refugees in Mamuju and Majin regions that bore the brunt of the 6.2-magnitude earthquake on January 15, 2021, has reached more than 91,000.

At least 100 people were killed and hundreds more injured in the aftermath of the earthquake.
