Earthquake strikes near Lesvos

An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale jolted south of the Greek island of Lesvos on Monday morning.

According to the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake occurred at 07:46 local time. The epicenter was 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) southwest of Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos.

So far, no damages have been reported.

The focal depth was 15 kilometers. Two subjects measuring 4.5 and 4.8 on the Richter scale were subsequently recorded.

The earthquake was felt in Lesvos, Chios and the Turkish coast. The sea area was hit by a series of small earthquakes before the main earthquake.

Geology professor Efthimios Lykas said the tremor may have been a continuation of the seismic activity that triggered a strong earthquake in 2017.

The epicenter of the magnitude 6.3 earthquake in 2017 was 5 km south of Plumari, a town on the coast of Lesvos.

Several buildings were damaged, but the village of Frisa was the worst affected, with 10 people hospitalized.

In the Turkish city of Izmir, which was severely affected by the earthquake, dozens of buildings were damaged or completely collapsed. Emergency services in both countries immediately attended the scene, as rescue efforts continued into the night.
