Scientists continue to monitor the eruption of Kīlauea volcano on the island of Hawaii.

The US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says activity is stable, with lava from the western vault continuing to supply the summit crater with lava.

All activity is confined to the summit, with no signs of the eruption migrating down the rift.

The strength of the eruption appears to be related to the sustained inflation and deflationary cycles recorded at the top. During times of inflation, volcanic activity is most intense.

As of the morning of February 8, the active western portion of the lava lake was about 215 meters, or 705 feet, deep, with the eastern portion of the lava lake hardening at the surface.

Sulfur dioxide emission rates remain high, with the most recent measurements at around 2,200 tons / day.

The southern flank of Kolaouia Island was the site of five earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or more in the past year.

HVO says these earthquakes occur in response to the sudden motion of the separation fault – found at the interface between Kīlauea volcano and the ocean floor – that travels southeast over the oceanic crust. The sudden movement releases pressure on the south side caused by the accumulation of magma below the surface.

Higher rates of movement on the fault are expected, following the large 6.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in May 2018 during the eruption of Kilauea volcano in the Lower East Rift Zone.
