The WHO is adopting a new ten-year plan to end illnesses from neglected tropical diseases
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) new roadmap for neglected tropical diseases proposes ambitious targets and innovative approaches to tackle 20 diseases that affect more than a billion mostly poor people and thrive in areas where access to quality health services, clean water and sanitation is scarce.
The targets include the eradication of dracunculiasis (guinea pigs) and yawning, and a 90% reduction in the need for NTD treatment by 2030. “Completing the neglect of achieving sustainable development goals: a roadmap for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030´ aims to accelerate programmatic action and restore momentum by proposing concrete actions focused on integrated intervention delivery platforms, thereby improving the cost-effectiveness and coverage of the program. It was approved by the World Health Assembly (WHA 73 (33)) in November 2020.
“If we want to stop the plague of neglected tropical diseases, we urgently need to act differently,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “It means injecting new energy into our efforts and working together in new ways to ensure the prevention and treatment of all these diseases to all who need them.”
A people-centered approach
The roadmap is designed to address critical gaps in multiple diseases by integrating and incorporating approaches and actions within national health systems and across sectors.
“Basically, this travel map aims to put people first. It includes cross-sectoral work in delivering programs for all 20 NTDs and promoting ownership of capital and states“said Dr Mwelecele Ntuli Malecela, Director of the WHO ‘s Department for the Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases. “To do this, programs must be sustainable with measurable outcomes, backed by adequate domestic funding.“
Goals for 2030
The roadmap, developed through a broad advisory process involving countries, partners, stakeholders, the scientific community and academia, provides opportunities to assess, evaluate and tailor program actions as needed over the next decade, setting clear goals and milestones. Another significant feature is the encouragement of greater ownership by national and local authorities, including communities. The overall global goals for 2030 are:
- reduce by 90% the number of people in need of NTD treatment
- at least 100 countries that have eliminated at least one NTD
- eradicate two diseases (dracunculiasis and yawning)
- reduce by 75% the disability-adjusted life expectancy (DALY) associated with NTD
In addition, the roadmap will follow 10 interrelated and disease-specific targets that include reducing by more than 75% the number of deaths from NTDs transmitted by vectors such as dengue, leishmaniasis and others, promote full access to basic water supply, sanitation and hygiene in areas endemic for NTDs and achieve greater improvement in the collection and reporting of NTD data disaggregated by gender.
Despite progress, challenges must be overcome
Significant gains have been made over the past decade, resulting in 600 million people less at risk of NTDs than ten years ago, and 42 countries have eliminated at least one NTD, including some that have defeated more NTDs.

However, significant challenges remain, including climate change, conflict, new zoonotic and environmental threats to health, as well as persistent inequalities in access to health services, adequate housing, safe water and sanitation. There are also large gaps in current diagnostic diagnostic packages, treatment models, and service delivery.
Neglected tropical diseases
NTDs affect over a billion people globally and cause pain and disability, creating lasting health, social and economic consequences for individuals and societies. They prevent children from going to school and adults from going to work, trapping communities in cycles of poverty and inequality. People affected by disabilities and impairments caused by NTDs often experience stigma in their communities, hindering their access to necessary care and leading to social isolation.
