Delhi NCR 13 experienced a slight earthquake in 2020: government data

Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Harsh Vardan recently informed Lok Sabha that the department is exploring possibilities for conducting a pilot study on earthquake early warning system in cooperation with the US Geological Survey.

While the tremors felt late Friday night were the first massive tremor in Delhi and NCR in 2021, government data shows that 2020 was filled with light earthquakes in the National Capital Region. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, a total of 964 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or more were recorded last year, 13 of which were in and around the capital region.

Strong tremors in Delhi – NCR: what we know so far

Late on Friday evening, people felt a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in northwestern India, including Delhi. The epicenter was in Tajikistan. Other than Delhi, strong tremors were felt in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan on Friday night.

Between April and August of 2020, the National Capital Region recorded four minor earthquakes – and the centers were only in the region. On April 12, people felt the first earthquake in 2020 on the northeastern border of Delhi. The second earthquake occurred on May 10.

The region faces seismic hazards because it is located near a fault line and after small earthquakes in 2020, the National Seismological Center began a geophysical survey of the area.
