A strong earthquake hits Japan near Fukushima

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Japan near Fukushima late Saturday evening, injuring at least 12 people.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 11:07 PM local time (9.07 AM ET), was 45.9 miles (73.9 kilometers) northeast of Nami, a coastal town 60 miles from Fukushima, according to the US Geological Survey.

The depth of the earthquake was about 36 miles. According to the state broadcaster NHK, injuries have been reported in Fukushima and Miyagi Prefecture. Katsunobu Kato, Japanese Prime Minister, said that no tsunami warning was issued regarding Saturday’s earthquake, and no anomalies were reported at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake struck Japan. More than 20,000 people were killed or missing in the earthquake and tsunami, while hundreds of thousands lost their homes.

The earthquake also caused the country’s worst nuclear disaster – three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant melted, releasing radioactive material into the air and more than 100,000 people were evacuated from the area.

Kato added that about 830,000 families were in the Kanto region, which includes Greater Tokyo, and about 90,000 households in the Tohoku region were cut off after the earthquake on Saturday.

Kato said Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has instructed the government to survey the damage caused by the earthquake, conduct rescue efforts when necessary, and pass the information to the public in a timely manner.
