As if the global epidemic was not enough, some notable geological events made headlines around the world, from the earthquakes in Idaho and Utah to volcanic eruptions around the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

It seems that any time the disaster occurs in the headlines, often whether it is related to plumbing or otherwise, online conversation inevitably turns into Yellowstone and the hidden volcano beneath the famous park and beyond. You don’t have to spend a lot of time searching the internet to find new headlines warning of a possible outbreak and predictions that the Caldera will explode its summit sometime next year.

However, the last round of fear and rumor does not have much science to actually support it, although the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) lists the alert level for Yellowstone Volcano in green or normal.

Since the aftershocks are still being felt by a 6.5-magnitude earthquake near Boise, the USGS office in Idaho took to Twitter on Thursday to confirm that the area’s clatter was not related to any volcanic activity in Yellowstone:

The Boys earthquake was followed by a 5-magnitude earthquake in Salt Lake City just a few weeks ago.

YVO responsible scientist Mike Poland said in the monthly update below that earthquakes are not associated with the Yellowstone volcano.

“These are actually related to mountain building operations in the western United States … These types of earthquakes are not common in the region.”

It is important to remember that it is clear that this process occurs very slowly over a period of ages. An earthquake of a similar magnitude occurred in 1983 in the same area, which is the half-life of most of us, but only a second ago on geological time scales.

Poland says it is a good reminder that strong earthquakes are always possible throughout the western United States.

But the science simply states that there is no imminent eruption in Yellowstone and when a real danger begins to emerge, we will begin to mark – at least absolutely – decades ago.
