The story of “old wives”: the earthquake and hunting rumors

WHITSUNDAY hunters have developed a story of “old wives” who refuse to bite fish for months after the earthquake.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Whitsunday, northern Queensland yesterday afternoon, causing tremors from Mackay to Townsville.

Fishing addiction owner Mick Underwood described the belief that after the earthquake fish did not bite the story of “old wives” and said it was possibly an excuse used by people “unlucky to sting.”

“I remember the 2016 earthquake, and this was in the same location,” he said.

“The thing is that fish have to eat, earthquake or not, and I don’t remember having any problems from the 2016 earthquake – and that was the biggest.

“It’s in the shipping canal, what we call shallow water, which is a hot spot for the Red Emperor. There have been a lot of small earthquakes since then and I haven’t had any problems from there.”

“At best the fish might be outside the teeth,” Mr. Underwood said for a few days, but he has suggestions for anyone who might be anxious.

He said: “Stay close and shallow to the beach, around the islands directly, and look for trout and sweet lip.”

“They’re biting right now, and if I can’t personally catch any of them on the weekend, the earthquake rumor might be real.”

The owner of Whitsunday Fishing World Bob Spees said he had “never heard anything of this kind” and doubted that the fish would be affected by an earthquake.

He said there is even the possibility of it making it more active, with fish curious to get answers about movement.

“It is not uncommon to catch a fish that went off half an hour ago, with that hook in its mouth,” he said.
