Sogo escapes from devastation after an earthquake strikes northern Japan

Nearly 10 years after the devastating Tohoku earthquake in March 2011, the Fukushima region, 300 kilometers north of Tokyo, was hit by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake, injuring more than 100 people and cutting thousands of homes without electricity.

A major highway was also closed due to the landslide, while the Shinkansen express service was also suspended in the area.

While some damage was also reported in neighboring Miyagi Prefecture, which lies north of Fukushima, a representative from Sogo contacted by Motorsport.com said the circuit, which regularly hosts SUPER GT and Super Formula events, was not affected.

There were concerns that the earthquake may have disrupted the ongoing renovation work in Soju of the crater and sheds that began late last year, but that was not the case, according to the actor.

Twin Ring Motegi, located south of Fukushima in Tochigi Prefecture, also reported that it escaped any damage.

The track, the home of the Japanese Motorcycle Tour and formerly host of IndyCar Series races, was severely damaged by the 2011 disaster, making its elliptical track (pictured above in 2010) unusable for anything other than a show.

A decade later, the ellipse has yet to be fixed, with the track owner Mobilityland – a Honda subsidiary – unwilling to cover the cost of replacing the 1.5-mile track’s runway.

While Soju and Motegi both survived the damage from the earthquake, Ebisu’s venue in Nihonmatsu, known for holding drift events like D1GP, wasn’t so lucky.

Ebisu’s Western Circle, one of the seven lanes that make up the facility, was severely damaged in the earthquake and the facility is now declared closed.

Several prolific Japanese drivers have shared photos on social media that clearly show how the landslide affected the construction of the Western Ring Pit. No injuries were reported at the facility.
