ShakeAlert earthquake warning system takes off in Oregon, Washington

The US Geological Survey said Tuesday that the earthquake early warning system known as ShakeAlert will be able to send alerts directly to wireless devices in Oregon on March 11 and to Washington state in May, to complete the West Coast launch.

The ShakeAlert system, which warns of major earthquakes, has been enabled in California since October 2019.

The system uses a network of sensors that detect the onset of an earthquake and calculate the magnitude, location, and expected amount of vibration. It sends information in real time to distributors who send alerts to cell phones and the Internet.
