China has condemned recent protests against Hong Kong’s government for “horrific events” that have caused serious damage to the rule of law.
“We hope … that people will remain steadfast in defending the rule of law,” a spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macau Government’s Office of the Government said.
Hong Kong has seen protests against government and democracy for eight consecutive weeks.
Over the weekend, clashes broke out between police and protesters.
In a single statement, a spokesman condemned Hong Kong’s “malicious acts and crimes committed by radical elements”.
“We call on Hong Kong citizens to realize the seriousness of the current situation,” he said.
