These pictures spread in reports of an earthquake in Turkey in 2020, not Afghanistan

Two photos have been shared on various Facebook and Instagram posts claiming to show the devastation in Afghanistan after the February 2021 earthquake. The claim is false: The two images were taken from Associated Press reports of an earthquake in Turkey in January 2020.

The photos were posted on Facebook here on February 12, 2021. Comment text: “Shocking, vivid pictures from Afghanistan.”

The pictures have a misleading watermark: “Daily Kashmir Official”.

The post was circulated online on the same day that a powerful earthquake struck Tajikistan in Central Asia. The earthquake was felt across the region, including in Afghanistan, Indian media reported Times Now and Livemint.

The claim is false.

Reverse Google image searches found that the two images were published in the Associated Press (AP) reports and show the effects of an earthquake in Turkey in January 2020.

The first photo was published in an AP report here on January 25, 2020.
