Mass power outages in Idaho due to winter weather ‘unlikely’

Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT / KSVT) – San Antonio, Texas resident Ross Solis said that once the storm hit, people were doing everything they could to stock up on essentials.

“A lot of people were panic buying, and the stores had no water, food, or almost anything,” Solis said.

Before last week, he didn’t think he’d have to worry about harsh Texas winter weather.

“For us to have such snow in Texas, not having energy and heat, that was really a struggle for a few days,” Solis said.

Left without electricity for several days while the state was reeling from near-freezing temperatures was a common thread among Texans throughout the storm. While severe winter weather is more common in Idaho, some residents of Gemstone State have been concerned about similar conditions occurring in their homes. This is a circumstance that University of Idaho engineering professor Brian Johnson thinks is unlikely.

“Things are designed for cooler weather here,” Johnson said. “I think that’s not a problem.”

A mass outage in any state that lasts for several hours can lead to an alarming energy recovery – as it did in Texas. This is because devices with thermostats consume full power, which places the network under a heavy load.

Rather than temperature the cause of the interruptions in Idaho, Johnson thinks a natural disaster will be the most likely cause.

“The earthquake will definitely be a problem,” Johnson said. “Natural gas could disrupt or have some potential impact on the hydropower system. Dams have to meet certain earthquake criteria, so they will probably be fine, but you may have to close for inspection. Wildfires can also cause problems.”

It’s not just a natural disaster within Idaho that can also be a problem. Idaho is part of the Western Electric Power Grid, so an earthquake in California could lead to a blackout in Idaho.

“One of the times I’ve seen a blackout that affected Idaho was the Northridge earthquake in 1994. It actually caused a blackout in southeast Idaho,” Johnson said.
