Today, a German court ruled that a former member of President Assad’s secret police was guilty of facilitating the torture of prisoners. Eyad Al-Gharib sought asylum in Germany before being arrested in 2019. Campaigners hope his trial will be the first to get justice for the hundreds of thousands of people who have disappeared in the Syrian regime’s notorious prisons.
