Washington state tests earthquake early warning system Thursday

People can sign up to receive a wireless emergency test alert and submit feedback to the Washington Emergency Department.

SEATTLE – People in Pierce, King and Thurston counties can take part in the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System test Thursday morning. The ShakeAlert system, which will be able to deliver alerts directly to wireless devices, will soon be part of the state’s earthquake warning system.

The Wireless Emergency Alert Test will be sent out at 11 AM Thursday. The Washington Emergency Department said residents who want to participate should choose to test and not assume their carrier did so automatically.

The ShakeAlert system was developed by the research universities of California, Oregon, and the University of Washington, along with the United States Geological Survey.

The system uses a network of sensors that detect the onset of an earthquake and calculate the magnitude, location, and expected amount of vibration. It sends information in real time to distributors who send alerts to cell phones and the Internet.

“Within seconds of detecting an earthquake, if it were to cause a devastating and powerful earthquake where people would most likely feel it and be hurt, it would send an alert,” said Maximilian Dixon of the Washington State Emergency Department. The ShakeAlert test was scheduled for February due to the 20th anniversary of the 6.8 Nisqually earthquake on February 28.

People who choose to take the test should receive an alert at 11 am, which will partially read, ‘Earthquake Alert System Test’.

This is just a test of the wireless system and it will not be broadcast on TV or radio.

The warning system is expected to be officially launched in Washington in May.
