6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Greece, world news

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said a magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit Greece on Wednesday, after earlier reporting a magnitude 6.9 and 5.9 magnitude earthquake.

The fire department said that according to the first reports, a home and a school were damaged. Police also closed a bridge broken by the earthquake.

The Civil Protection Agency has also reported landslides in the area, and authorities are assessing further damage.

“It all happened very quickly, people ran out of buildings, and there are still aftershocks,” said Chrisula Cazioli, an employee in the mayor’s office in the local town of Alasuna.

“Fortunately, the teachers were able to get the children out very quickly, and there were no victims,” Ternavos Mayor Yannis Kokoras told Sky TV.

‘Big’ minions

The Athena Observatory said the epicenter was 21 km south of the town of Alasuna, near Larissa, and was at a depth of eight km.

At least three aftershocks occurred in the aftermath of the main earthquake – including one with a magnitude of 4.0 magnitude – and authorities have warned that more could happen.

Seismologist, Gerasimus Papadopoulos, warned of more “large aftershocks”, speaking on Sky Radio.

But experts stress that earthquake faults in the region rarely cause larger tremors than those that occurred on Wednesday.

Manolis Skordelis, a seismologist at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, told the National Iranian News Agency that the last major earthquake in the region was in the 18th century and had a magnitude of 6.2.

Greece lies on a number of fault lines, and is prone to earthquakes intermittently.

But earthquakes often occur at sea and often do not kill people or cause massive damage.

The last deadly earthquake struck the Aegean Sea with a magnitude of 7.0 magnitude, between the Greek island of Samos and the city of Izmir, in western Turkey.

The majority of the damage from this earthquake was in Turkey, where 114 people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured. In Greece, two teenagers were reported killed on the island of Samos.
