The Alpine Fault Promotional Campaign brings the science of hazards and impacts to more South Island communities

AF8 [Alpine Fault magnitude 8] Collaborating once again with prominent seismologists and Civil Defense Emergency Management (CDEM) groups to bring the award-winning AF8 Roadshow to more South Island communities.

AF8 Roadshow: The Science Under Feet features public science talks and interactive study sessions designed to share the story of the Alpine Fault, the effects and consequences of a future magnitude 8 earthquake, and how people can become better prepared for it.

This year’s promotional campaign will tour the South Island from March 23 until May 24, 2021, made possible with funding from the Earthquake Commission (EQC).

Public events are planned in 14 communities, including 15 school visits, around the South Island, with top scientists talking about the work they’re doing and sharing the risk of collapsing in the Alps and the science of impact. AF8 Program Leader Alice Lake Hammond explains that the real success of AF8’s work has been the program’s ability to blend world-leading science with local knowledge and experience to raise awareness and increase our preparedness for the next Alpine Fault earthquake.

EQC’s head of resilience and research, Dr Joe Horrocks, says that while contemplating the Alpine Rift and its potential impact could be horrific, there are still a lot of communities and people they can do to prepare. “From knowing how to drop, cover, carry and store food and water, to larger measures like fixing tall and heavy furniture to the wall, or removing dangerous chimneys. We can all do something that will increase our resilience in the event of an earthquake in the Alps.”

Professor Caroline Orkston, AF8 Head of Science agrees, “While we cannot predict when earthquakes will occur, scientific research has shown that the Alpine fault has a history of generating large, regular earthquakes. The next major event of alpine faults is likely to occur. During the lives of most of us, or in the lives of our children and youth, who will have major impacts in the short and long term. “

AF8 Roadshow is supported by the six South Island CDEM groups, EQC, Resilience to Nature Challenges, QuakeCoRE, GNS Science, University of Otago, University of Canterbury and University of Auckland.

It is part of an ongoing series of activities designed to support conversations and share knowledge about major natural hazard events such as the Alpine earthquake, ensuring that communities and agencies are better prepared collectively.
