Rescue equipment rocks during the M5.4 earthquake: Video

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the Reykjanes peninsula, southwest of Iceland, at 2:15 pm yesterday, mbl.is reported. Its source was 5.4 km southwest of Mount Fagrad, Svial. Residents as far away as Sauðárkrókur, northern Iceland, reported feeling it, as did residents of the islands of Vestmannaeyjar and Kirkjubæjarklaustur, southern Iceland.

It was followed 20 seconds later by another earthquake of 4.0 magnitude, prolonging the vibration of people’s homes and increasing the sensation of shaking the boat. Earlier in the day, at 12:34 pm, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake had already hit the area.

The M5.4 earthquake is the second largest since the magnitude 5.7 earthquake swarm began on February 24.

Scientists are monitoring the area closely for a possible volcanic eruption.

A security camera recording of the rescue team building Þorbjörn in the town of Grindavík, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, clearly shows how the earthquake shook vehicles stored inside the building, which is located less than 5 kilometers from the source. The video was posted by the rescue team on Facebook.
