Canadian Timber Block to make Vancouver schools more earthquake-resistant

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 15, 2021 / CNW / – Canada supports innovation in the forest sector through green construction of low-rise non-residential timber buildings. The widespread use of wood in public buildings, such as schools, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, promotes innovation and supports local value-added manufacturing.

Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Honorable Seamus Origin Jr., today announced an investment of $ 1,482,000 in Vancouver, BC 39th Education District. This investment will enable the construction of two local schools as part of recent seismic upgrades to make British Columbia schools safer.

Bayview Elementary School and Sir Mathew Begbie Elementary School are part of a Vancouver School Board pilot project for future Collegiate Wood Schools. The original structure of Bayview Elementary School was demolished, making way for a new school to be built over the existing footprint with greater resistance against earthquakes. The building has two floors of classrooms and teaching areas, as well as a gymnasium and learning center in the neighborhood.

Sir Matthew Bigby Elementary School will be a completely new modern design of 34,000 square feet with open learning spaces. With mass timber as the primary building material, the total carbon benefit is around 1,400 tons of CO2, equivalent to removing hundreds of cars from the road for a year.

Funding for the project is provided through the GCWood Green Building Through Lumber program, which promotes the use of wood in unconventional construction projects, such as wooden high-rise buildings, low-rise non-residential buildings and bridges. The program aims to position Canada as a world leader in innovative wood construction technologies and a low carbon economy.

Projects such as these are helping Canada achieve its 2030 climate change goals by finding effective ways to build sustainably with Canadian wood products, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve seismic performance.

Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Murray, Minister for Digital Government

“The Vancouver School Board is delighted to partner with Natural Resources Canada and the British Columbia Department of Education on this exciting project, as two of our schools will be one of the first schools in Canada to use mass timber in their seismic alternative buildings. Incorporating this is a renewable and sustainable product that supports the Board’s commitment. By reducing carbon emissions. “

In addition to meeting the requirements of the earthquake mitigation program, the wood frame systems used in these buildings provide warm and attractive spaces for the school community as well as help the school board achieve their sustainability goals.”

Nick Bevilacqua, School Principal, Rapid Structural Engineers + Epp
