She said: “These studies also indicate that pressure will remain relatively low during the planned six-month reduced injection test.”

Lev said the agency would monitor injection pressure and seismic response near the well, and would shut down the well for evaluation if any abnormal responses were observed.

“Based on our analysis of the data collected after the March 4 earthquake, we believe it is wise to restart the unit’s injection operations at a reduced rate,” Ed Warner, director of the Western Colorado District Office for Reclamation Office, said in a statement.

The well’s role in salinity control has decreased over the years as the reclamation office has had to reduce injection rates while increasing underground pressure levels. Lev said the well was intercepted and disposed of about 109,000 tons of salt annually from 2002 to 2012, and 95,000 tons annually from 2013-18. The agency expects to get rid of about 33,000 tons in the six-month test.
