Still to my shame Mao s Cultural Revolution – BBC News
In an effort to meet his management’s challenges, President Mao created a wave of unrest in China in the 1960s.
He wanted to foster opposition, and free the country of ancient Chinese culture, social values and history.
At the forefront of the Cultural Revolution were the Red Guards: young, radical students and supporters of Mao and his circle. Parents and teachers were cursed and beaten and killed in some cases. Old temples, architecture and literature were also destroyed. A member of the Red Guards was Saul Yeung. He told the Witness about the memories of that time and the guilt he still carries.
