A strong earthquake hits the Japanese capital. The US Geological Survey says 7.2

On Saturday, a powerful earthquake struck off northern Japan, shaking buildings even in Tokyo and triggering a tsunami warning in part of the northern coast. No major damage was reported, but several people were lightly injured.

The United States Geological Survey estimated the strength of the quake was 7.0 magnitude and 54 kilometers (33.5 miles) deep. The shaking started before 6:10 p.m.

The epicenter was off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, in the rugged northeast of the country, which was severely damaged during the massive earthquake and tsunami of 2011 that left more than 18,000 people dead.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning of up to 1 meter for Miyagi Prefecture immediately after the earthquake, but raised it after about 90 minutes.

Officials there said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said seven people were injured in Miyagi Prefecture, including two older women – one hit her head with a door and the other injured in the shoulder from the furniture. In neighboring Iwate Prefecture, a woman in her 50s fell and cut her mouth.

The strong earthquake caused temporary power outages in some areas and the suspension of express train services in the area, according to the East Japan Railway Company.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said that no anomalies were detected at nuclear power plants in the region, including the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which suffered collapses in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Akira Wakimoto, a crisis management official in Tomi Township, Miyagi Prefecture, said he was in his apartment when the earthquake struck, and he felt his room shake for a long time.

In a coastal city of Ofunato, a hotel employee, Shotaro Suzuki, said there was a temporary outage of the elevators and they stopped briefly, but the electricity was restored and there were no other problems.

Suzuki (star sign) told NHK: “Our guests seemed anxious at first, but they all went back to their rooms, and our facility seemed to be fine.

In mid-February, another strong earthquake in the area killed one person and injured more than 180 others, although most injuries were minor. The earthquake destroyed roads, train lines and thousands of homes. It also caused minor damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency spokesman, Noriko Kamaya, said at a press conference that Saturday’s earthquake is a consequence of the magnitude 9.0 earthquake in 2011. Kamaya urged people to be careful and stay away from the coast due to the potential high waves.
