Coronavirus: US state sues China over virus manipulation – BBC News

The U.S. state of Missouri has said it is suing the Chinese government and said the coronavirus has caused serious economic losses.

In the lawsuit, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has done little to China to spread the virus.

Schmitt noted that Missouri residents have suffered tens of billions of dollars financially.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry denounced the move, saying that “the frivolous lawsuit has no factual or legal basis.”

A spokesman said: “It’s really nonsensical. Based on the principle of sovereign equality, U.S. courts have no jurisdiction over the Chinese government.”

Legal experts have also questioned the move and how far it will go. A doctrine called sovereign immunity provides broad protection for foreign governments to sue in U.S. courts.
