Coronavirus: The latest from Europe – BBC News

 



The number of deaths in Italy on Wednesday rose to 25,085, up from 437 compared to the previous 534. The number of people confirmed to be sick with the virus has fallen for the third day in a row and people in intensive care have also continued to fall.

Another 544 people have died of coronavirus in France. The story – 336 in hospitals and 208 in care homes – brought the number of Covid-19 deaths in France to 21,340.

16 German states have announced plans to make face masks mandatory. While some states are not mandatory for people while shopping, everyone across the country will need to wear face coverings on public transportation.

Spain intends to extend the state of emergency for another two weeks until May 9. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said in parliament today that the country could begin lifting restrictions in the second half of May, as long as the authorities managed to stay “above the virus”
