Opinion: Preparing for “The Big One” | Opinion

What would you do if you received an alert telling you that the largest earthquake in the Pacific Northwest is about to strike? How prepared are you for the inevitable? The expected magnitude 9.0 earthquake is 75 years late, and scientists expect it to arrive in the next 50 years. Residents from Vancouver Island to Portland to Cape Mendocino need to devise a plan now to prepare for this inevitable natural force.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake is commonly referred to as the “Great Earthquake”. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is where the Juan de Fucia, an oceanic plate, and the North American tectonic plate meet. The North American Plate is steadily bulging upwards as a result of it being pushed by the Joan de Fuca Plate face to face. Sooner rather than later, North America will emerge, causing a devastating chain of events.

9.0 Earthquakes differ from 6.0 or 7.0 in the length of time they last and the damage they cause. Medium to large earthquakes, ranging from 5.0 to 7.9, lasting 10 to 30 seconds; While earthquakes 9.0 can last for up to five minutes. The last 9.0 earthquake felt in the Pacific Northwest occurred in the year 1700. The entire shoreline decreased between 3 to 6 feet and a tsunami, reached 33 feet, traveled across the ocean and struck Japan.

This earthquake will “affect the entire Pacific Northwest in one afternoon, and profoundly change our economy, our culture and our society,” said Ian Madden, a prominent seismologist and seismologist with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineralogy. KOIN Special Report.

A 2018 report by Oregon DOGAMI says the consequences could lead to tens of thousands of injured or dead, $ 80 billion in building damage and more than 250,000 people facing prolonged displacement. Buildings and bridges are expected to contract. Gas and electricity will be cut off for a while. Local, state and federal governments can only do so much for the hundreds of thousands of individuals who will be affected.

My goal here is not to frighten you or make it seem like there’s no hope. My goal is to convince you to prepare. There are many steps you can take to prepare you and your friends and family as much as possible.

Having a family and friend plan is a great first step. Discuss multiple meeting locations that will work with all interested parties. Review who will be partnering with whom if the group splits, whether it is voluntary or not. Plan for phone lines to be congested in and around your city, so designating a contact outside the disaster area will allow for an immediate source of information.

Make sure you have your family’s documents in one place and ready to go. Find out about your evacuation methods; Walk with them if you can. Be aware of the type of food you are storing. The electricity will be low, so your food must be heated with a flame. Frying pan, bowl, can opener, plates or bowl and some utensils cover the basics.

Also, remember that your neighbors will be the first to respond to you. We saw this two weeks ago when Texas faced a severe winter storm. Neighbors came together to provide blankets, food, water, and even shelter for each other. It’s easy to go through a disaster when you have a community.

Oregon is implementing an earthquake early warning system called ShakeAlert that will send alerts to our wireless devices. Lin County requires families to plan to stock up on enough “everyone in your family” supplies for at least 72 hours. She also called for a DIY disaster backpack, with water bottles, snacks, flashlights, gloves, sturdy shoes, etc., plus a first aid kit, which could be stored somewhere.

Today, millions of residents of Oregon, Washington and California live in the epicenter of the next great natural disaster. The fallout will lead to the largest humanitarian crisis the United States has ever seen. We don’t know when that will happen. Just taking the time to devise a plan for the inevitable Cascadia Subduction Zone will save lives.
