Washington State – The Washington Department of Emergency Management launches the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System on May 4.

The system, operated by the US Geological Survey and the Pacific Northwest Network of Earthquakes, is able to give residents seconds of warning before an earthquake strikes.

We all know that any earthquake can strike at any time. An earthquake early warning system can provide the critical time Washington people need to drop, cover, and hang on. Governor Jay Inslee said it has the power to save lives and reduce damage to critical infrastructure.

ShakeAlert does not predict earthquakes, rather, it detects them quickly and is able to provide information including size, location and intensity. Giving residents valuable time to get around.

The system also has the ability to shut water valves and raise fire station doors so first responders can eject vehicles and equipment, slow trains, and warn hospitals to stop surgeries.

Android users will likely be able to receive alerts through both wireless emergency alerts and the built-in software of their phones. The catch is that users must turn on their location services and enable earthquake alerts.

Third-party apps powered by ShakeAlert may also be available when the system launches in May.

The Washington Department of Emergency Management will host a webinar on Thursday, April 29 where partners will provide background information on the launch of the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System.
