Earthquake in New England? Vibration, “boom” sounds reported in Massachusetts, Rhode Island not an earthquake, says the US Geological Survey

One person felt it in Hingham, another in Newton, and others in Cape Cod: A roar shook their homes, for some, leaving residents wondering Friday morning if an earthquake was happening in New England.

“The house shook when I was drinking my coffee,” wrote one BayStarter company on Twitter.

Another person posted on the social media platform how when she left California for Massachusetts this year, she thought she would leave earthquakes behind.

Twitter user Layne Morgan wrote, “But here I am, waking up in Massachusetts.”

However, the rumbling, shaking and “booming” sounds reported by people in parts of southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island early on Friday did not appear to actually be an earthquake.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) posted on Twitter saying it was not aware of any officially reported seismic damage or activity in the area. MEMA indicated that it has been in contact with the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which has not yet recorded an earthquake in the area.

A USGS online map showing earthquakes measuring 2.5+ on the Richter scale over the past 24 hours shows any activity in New England. The earliest major seismic activity was reported in Ratliff, Oklahoma.

“We continue to monitor for any potential impacts,” MEMA said of the reports in Massachusetts.

However, the lack of confirmation from the USGS hasn’t stopped residents across New England from taking to Twitter to speculate whether what they felt on Friday morning was an earthquake.

One user wrote, “Did anyone in New England feel a short earthquake”.
