USGS says vibrating, Friday’s boom sounds at RI and Mass. Not an earthquake

Boston (WBZ NewsRadio) – Was there another earthquake on the south coast on Friday? Residents of the area say they felt one in the morning hours – but officials say there is no evidence to support this.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said Friday that it is monitoring activity on the southern coast and the Cape after receiving multiple reports of earthquakes from relevant residents experiencing vibration or noise of the “ boom ” type.

According to the US Geological Survey, the agency did not find any seismic activity or earthquakes in the area during that period. The National Weather Service in Boston echoed that statement – saying they had seen no evidence of an earthquake.

Despite the results, MEMA said Friday that it will continue to monitor for any potential effects. It is not clear why rumbling and loud noises occur.

The last recorded earthquake hit the area off the coast of Dartmouth in November. People felt the earthquake 4.0 across New England and even parts of Canada.
