A magnitude 4.3 earthquake shakes Mauna Loa

(BIVN) – A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck the southern flank of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. GMT.

The earthquake occurred a few miles northwest of the city of Pahala in Kai, and was located 5 miles below sea level. The earthquake was stronger and shallower than the continuous swarm of deep Bahala earthquakes, which are located in the southeast and are on average about 20 miles away.

The United States Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory shows that more than 100 people reported feeling the earthquake within half an hour of the event.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 Richter occurred 14 minutes ago. It was located in the same general area and at the same depth.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that the quake did not produce a tsunami, although some areas may have been jolted.

“As with all earthquakes, be aware of the potential for post-traumatic shocks,” Hawaii County Civil Defense said in a radio message. “If an earthquake is felt strongly in your area, preventive checks must be taken for any damage, especially to the connections of gas, water and electricity facilities.”

UPDATE – (1:30 PM) – Mauna Loa does not go off. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory provided this earthquake information:

According to HVO global official Ken Hoon, the earthquake had no apparent impact on the volcanoes of Mauna Loa or Kolauea. “At this time, we have not observed any changes in activity at Mauna Loa or Kīlauea as a result of this earthquake. Please be aware that aftershocks are possible and can be felt. HVO continues to monitor Kīlauea and other Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.”

Both earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 and 3.9 on the Richter scale appear to slide along vertical faults resulting from the southeast movement of the southern flank of Mauna Loa. Today’s earthquakes are significantly shallow and west of the site of the continuous seismic swarm below the Pahala region that began in August 2019.

This is not a major departure from the seismic activity observed over the past year and the Mauna Loa volcano alert level remains in ADVISORY. Other Mauna Loa monitoring data streams do not show any significant change in deformation rates or patterns that would indicate an increase in volcanic hazard at this time.
