Discovery Plus acquires Sean Penn’s documentary “Citizen Ben”

Hollywood star Sean Penn’s upcoming documentary “Citizen Penn” will be released on Discovery Plus.

Written and directed by Don Hardy, the documentary follows the actor and his team of volunteers to help Haitians in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake.

According to a statement released by Discovery Plus, the film will be premiering on the streaming service on May 6.

Citizen Penn chronicles the moment when Ben and his team of volunteers landed in Haiti, a few days after the earthquake, and ten years later. The film offers viewers an intimate, honest, and self-contemplating look at the victories and challenges of those who have decided to do something.

The 60-year-old said: “From climate to conflict resolution, to poverty and Covid-19, citizenship increasingly requires service. Service itself can be a bumpy road, but we all have to travel.”

Originally shown at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, it won the People’s Choice Award at the Heartland Film Festival and screened at the AFI Fest, Raindance and Vancouver International Film Festival, among others.

Hardy also produced the documentary with Shawn Dailey. Executive producers include Ellen Fear, Kim Forbes Trammell, Dan Brown and Josh Brown.

“Citizen Penn” features the original note of Linda Perry, with an original song “Eden: To Find Love,” written by Perry and Bono, and performed by Bono.
