There is no danger of a tsunami after the earthquake in Mauna Loa

April 4 – A 4.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded below Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii this morning, according to the US Geological Survey, and can be felt as far away as Kauai.

The earthquake occurred at 11:15 am today near the southeast side of Mauna Loa but was not large enough to generate a tsunami.

The epicenter was three miles northwest of Pahala, near Wood Valley, five miles below sea level.

The second earthquake, which recorded a magnitude of 3.9 in the same area, was preceded by the largest earthquake at 11:02 a.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey has received more than 130 reports from people who say they felt weak in light vibration within the first hour of the largest earthquake across the islands and one report from Kauai.

“At this time, we have not observed any changes in activity at Mauna Loa or Kilauea as a result of this earthquake. Please be aware that aftershocks are possible and can be felt. HVO continues to monitor Kilauea and other Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes,” said Ken Hoon, a scientist in charge of the Volcanology Observatory In Hawaii in a statement.

A swarm of earthquakes was previously recorded on March 29 beneath the northwest flank of Mauna Loa.
