6.1 magnitude earthquake hits the east coast

The earthquake struck the eastern coast at 7.37 pm.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast.

The depth of the quake was 22 kilometers, and the Jeonet network described the intensity of the shaking as moderate.

It was struck at 7.37 pm, about 120 kilometers east of Te Araroa.

GeoNet said the earthquake, which was initially reported with a magnitude of 6.2, is likely to follow the 7.3-magnitude Eastern Cape earthquake on March 5th.

“We expect more earthquakes in the region, and some of them may be felt on a large scale. This is the largest earthquake in the region since M6.2 on March 6th,” GeoNet wrote on Twitter.

The National Emergency Management Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami.

People in as far away as Oakland and the South Island have reported feeling it.

A resident of Ohope in eastern Bay of Plenty said she felt the vibration and the light shades were swaying.

Another person who was camping in the area described it as “an awful feeling”.

Shara said, “We are camping in Amal, and my friend and I felt that our chairs were swinging side by side.”
