Three aftershocks following Monday’s earthquake

On Tuesday, people felt light tremors, measuring 4.1, 3.7 and 3.9 on the Richter scale, in northern Bengal, Sikkim and Bhutan.

Residents of northern Bengal, neighboring Sikkim and Bhutan, have suffered at least three minor earthquakes or aftershocks throughout Tuesday after an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the Sikkim-Bhutan border at 8.49 pm on Monday.

Light tremors, measuring 4.1, 3.7 and 3.9 on the Richter scale, were felt in northern Bengal, Sikkim and Bhutan on Tuesday morning.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), these aftershocks came in less than 12 hours after Monday’s earthquake that sent people onto the streets.

The sources said that the milder events took place on Tuesday at 7.07 in the morning, 62 kilometers east of Siliguri, at 10.44 in the morning on the outskirts of the town of Jalpaiguri, and at 2.31 in the evening in Bhutan.

The sources said that although there have been no reports of damage or losses so far, people in all these places have left their homes in a state of panic.

Administrative sources said that the Governor of Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has summoned Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is currently on a tour in northern Bengal for her political campaigns, to inquire about her safety after the earthquakes near Siliguri and Jalbijuri.

The sources said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Koch Bihar to attend a public meeting, was briefed on the situation.
