Friday, April 9, 2021, 2:15 p.m. Press release: Kobe Coast District Council

The last national tsunami warning on March 5 was a timely reminder to all New Zealanders that you can never prepare for emergencies. Knowing your tsunami evacuation zone and the quickest path to safety is the best way to prepare in the event of a major earthquake affecting the Kapiti Coast.

This month, the Kapiti Coast Region Council is working in partnership with the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO) to raise awareness of the need for tsunami preparedness.

The Kapiti Coast District Council emergency observer, James Jefferson, says the Kapiti Coast is a seismically active region and we are living with the risk of a major earthquake that could affect us at any time.

“As our coastline extends the length of our region, a locally sourced earthquake is likely to trigger a tsunami that reaches our coast in just three minutes.

“We cannot predict when the earthquakes and tsunamis will happen, but we can do it to help protect ourselves and Wanau through preparedness,” said Mr. Jefferson.

Over 9,000 homes and businesses located within our tsunami evacuation zones will soon receive ‘Are you ready for a tsunami? In their message box to help them prepare better.

“ Knowing the warning signs of a tsunami and knowing what to do and where to go if a long or strong earthquake strikes will greatly increase your chances of survival.

“We know from the tsunami outside that planning and preparedness saves lives, so we encourage everyone who lives or works in the tsunami evacuation zone to learn what is long or strong, to move away from the mantra and make a plan.”

In Kapiti, there are three tsunami evacuation zones. The red tsunami evacuation area is the beach and sand dunes and is the most vulnerable. The orange zone is the sand dunes near the beach and the streets closest to the beach and rivers. The Yellow Zone is another 200 to 300 meters from the shore and includes low-lying areas close to rivers.

Jefferson says that if an earthquake from a local source triggered a tsunami, there would be no time for official warnings.

“The most important tsunami warning system is a natural one. Basically, if you live, work or play near the coast and feel a long or strong earthquake, it lasts more than a minute or strong enough to get you off your feet, walk away – don’t wait for an official warning,” he said. Mr. Jefferson.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
